There was a cattle market in Leominster until the early 1980s. The abattoir eventually closed as well. The number of small abattoirs in Britain has declined from 1,890 in 1971 to 249 in 2018. This means that many animals have to be transported alive much further to be killed, with all the added stress & expense that that entails.
